Goofus Carnival Glass Gold Rose Large Plate - Sold
This is a large Goofusware Carnival Glass plate decorated with long stem red roses with sawtooth edges. It is rare to find a Goofus ware plate in such good condition with little colour loss.
Goofus Glass is cold painted pressed glass. The colors and gold overlay were painted on the back to create a rich and vibrant look from the front. The absence of firing meant that goofusware could be mass produced inexpensively from the turn of the 19th century, to the 1920s, by a number of US companies including the Indiana Glass Company. Most companies moved to producing Carnival Glass around 1907. The name 'Goofus' probably evolved from the impression that it was “goofy,” or a cheap product meant to “goof” them. Goofus glass was an inexpensive giveaway, or promotional item, at carnivals, movie theatres, etc. Due to the lack of firing, most pieces have some or all of the color missing.
