Aesthetic Movement Ebonised Corner Cabinet - Sold
A beautiful Aesthetic Movement ebonised corner cabinet inlaid with contrasting walnut.
The cabinet has mirrors on the upper structure, and balcony shelving to the upper and lower structures. The date is around 1880 and, although there appears to be no makers label, it is very well made.
Although it is in very good condition, there is some wear commensurate with age and some loss of silvering to the right hand mirror. Please see pictures for detailed condition.
The aesthetic movement was a late 19th century movement, flourishing in Britain in the 1870s and 1880s, that championed pure beauty and ‘art for art’s sake’ (a slogan originating from the French poet Théophile Gautier). It was equally important in fine and applied arts, emphasising the visual and sensual qualities of art and design over practical, moral or narrative considerations. Leading exponents of the Aesthetic Movement were William Morris, Frederick Leighton, Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Rossetti.
