This listing is for a rare original 1747 mezzotint by Thomas Major after David Teniers entitled 'The Country Surgeon'. A fine copper engraving showing a Country Surgeon, tending the wounded foot of a peasant.

The doctors' surgery contains the usual tools of his trade, a stuffed reptile and a monkey at the window. It is inscribed:
"Le Chirurgien De Campagne.Dedie a Monseigneur le Marquis d'Argenson Ministre et Secretaire d'Etat.Grave d'apres le Tableau Original de David Teniers, Par son tres humble et tres Obeissant Serviteur Tho. Major.D. Teniers pinx. T. Major Sculp. 1747.

T
his print is after the 1678 painting by David Teniers the Younger.

The dimensions are including frame: 608mm (24.5") x 476mm (19"); without frame: 520mm (21") x 388mm (15.5").

The print is in very good condition for its age. There are a couple of small tears to the extreme left of the margin and the original frame could do with a little touching up. Please see photographs for detailed condition.
