Gerard Audran 1681 Le Grand Escalier de Versailles Engraving

This engraving is one of six from a volume entitled 'Le Grand Escalier de Versailles'. The engravings feature scenes from the staircase at Versailles with explanations of the allegorical meanings of each of the images and characters.

Pierre Mignard, was born in 1612 at Troyes, France, and was also called 'Le Romain'. In 1630, Mignard left France for Italy where he soon gained a reputation as a painter which brought him to the attention of Louis XIV. When he returned to France, he pitted himself against the head of the Academy, Charles Le Brun. Upon Le Brun's death in 1690, Mignard succeeded him to all of his posts; however, he was to die shortly thereafter in 1695.

Gérard Audran was born in Lyon in 1640. He went to Paris and gained a reputation as an engraver, amongst others engraving works by Le Brun. In 1667 went to Rome for three years before being recalled to Paris by Louis XIV. In 1681 he was admitted to the Royal Academy and he died in 1703.

The print is framed and glazed.
