W Brown 1800 Hand Coloured Caricature Lord (Marquis) Townshend
This is a W Brown caricature of Lord (Marquis) Townshend dating from 5th April 1800.
It is a hand coloured engraving and is inscribed: "Arm'd at both points (unless you keep aloof,) With Sword or Pencil he
can take you off". This is a caricature of Lord Townshend and was published by W Brown of King Street, Covent Garden, London.
The
British Museum catalogue contains ten prints which were
published by W Brown from a variety of different addresses from 1794 to 1817. The addresses are: King
Street, Covent Garden (1794), 43 Rupert Street (1795), Corner Essex
Street & Strand (1797), 34 King Street, Covent Garden (1797-1800),
20 King Street, Covent Garden (c.1803), 22 Warwick Street, Golden
Square (1817). The records of the Sun Fire Office indicate
that at least three of these addresses were also occupied by other
businesses at the time Brown was issuing prints: 34 King Street
during the early 1790s was home to the woollen draper, Thomas Lewis; 20
King Street between
1798 and 1808 was occupied by a family of hosiers named Hummell; and 43 Rupert Street were the trading premises of the
publishing firm of P. Molinari & Co. Brown was probably an employee of Molinari, and later Harris. Some
of his prints may have been produced with his employers consent, but many more were presumably engraved in Brown’s lodgings on King
Street and published whenever he had sufficient funds for the
purchase of materials and to cover his printing costs.
The last print in the British Museum’s collection to have been attributed
to Brown, indicates that he may have abandoned
publishing during the early 1800s and taken up employment with
the firm of Charles Cutter, a carver, gilder and picture-frame
manufacturer based at 22 Warwick Street, Golden Square.
The print is framed and glazed and is presented in excellent condition.
