Caroline Watson, 1785, Stipple Engraving of Princess Mary - Sold

This is a stipple engraving of HRH Princess Mary, after John Hoppner, engraved by Caroline Watson, 1785. Please also see our other Caroline Watson stipple engraving, of Princess Sophia.

Caroline Watson was born in London in 1760, or 1761, and was the daughter of the Irish engraver James Watson. She studied under her father and was known for her skilled worked in the stipple method. She died at Pimlico, London, on 10th June 1814.

Princess Mary, Duchess of Gloucester (1776-1857) was the fourth daughter of George III and the wife of William Frederick, 2nd Duke of Gloucester.

John Hoppner (1758-1810), was a portrait painter whose early success made him appear the natural successor to Sir Joshua Reynolds until the arrival in London in 1787 of Thomas Lawrence. While Hoppner was made portrait painter to the Prince of Wales in 1789, ensuring him extensive patronage in Whig political circles, it was Lawrence who became painter to the King.

The print is framed and glazed.
